There are two types of vitamins: fat soluble and water soluble.
These vitamins are usually found in fatty foods, such as vegetable oils, dairy foods and milk, eggs, liver, animal products and oily fish. They’re needed for everyday function and to maintain a healthy body. However, these foods do not need to be eaten on a daily basis. Why? Well, your body is capable of storing these types of vitamins in your liver and fatty tissues so they can be used later on. Vitamins that are fat soluble are: vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K.
These vitamins cannot be stored in the body, and therefore need to be taken regularly.
If you take too much of these vitamins your body will only absorb what it needs and will urinate the extra out, because they cannot be stored up. You’ll find these vitamins in vegetables, potatoes and fruit, as well as dairy. However, they can be destroyed and lost when cooked using harsh heat, or lost in water. When you boil fruits or vegetables you lose some vitamins, so it is widely recommended to steam or grill these foods. Water soluble vitamins include vitamin C, B vitamins and folic acid.
Minerals are needed to control bodily fluids outside and inside of cells, and are used to build teeth and bones, and help them turn food into energy. They are found in most natural food, such as meat, vegetables, fish, dairy, nuts, fruit and cereals. Calcium and iron are both types of minerals; calcium is used to maintain strong bones and support the heart, muscles and nerves, while iron helps with the production of red blood cells.
