The Health Benefits of water

Just Add Water - The Health Benefits Of Water

Ah, the wet stuff. The benefits of drinking water are endless! Our bodies consist of up to 75% water so its necessary to top yourself up daily with water to stay healthy in more ways than one.

As well as keeping the body hydrated, water has several fantastic benefits that not only benefit you body functions but also improves weight loss, skin care and mood to name a few!

Powers your workouts

Your ability to really bust through a workout deteriorates from the minute your body begins to get dehydrated. Losing just 2% of your body’s fluid will decrease performance by 25%. To be sure you stay in the optimum workout zone, try drinking plenty of water on your journey to the gym and on the journey home, as breaking a sweat while exercising is inevitable if the temperature is right.

Increases your metabolism

Trying to lose weight? Drinking water can boost your body’s ability to burn fat. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking water (about 17oz) increases metabolic rate by 30 percent in healthy men and women. The boost occurred within 10 minutes but reached a maximum 30-40 minutes after drinking. Plus, even mild dehydration will slow down metabolism by as much as 3 percent.

You might not be hungry

Studies also suggest that drinking one or two glasses of water before a meal can fill you up so you naturally eat less, says Andrea N. Giancoli, MPH, RD spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Other ways to reduce your cravings for an early lunch or snacks are to eat food that keep you full during the day also. Nuts are fantastic for this because they are full of good fats and fibre. Try adding some mint to your water to help suppress an overly active appetite and pair with some apple slices to stop any spikes in blood sugar.

Boosts Energy

Dehydration can leave you feeling drained and fatigued. You don't necessarily have to follow the "eight glasses a day" rule, but you do want to drink enough water to keep your body well hydrated. You can tell you're well hydrated when you don't feel thirsty and your urine is light-coloured. Try to get to the fridge or water cooler for a refill every few hours. The walk there will also help you wake up.

Stops you drinking calories

Before you know it, a couple of milky coffees and a cola with lunch will pack on more calories than you realise! Try swapping treat drinks for water.

Cola soda: 124-189 calories per serving

Orange Juice: 157-168 calories per serving

Whole milk: 220 calories per serving

Energy Drink: up to 350 calories per serving

Flushes away toxins

Without enough water flowing through our systems to carry out wastes and toxins, we would literally drown in our own poisonous metabolic wastes

Just as the liver is crucial to the digestive process, the kidneys are necessary for helping the body remove water and waste. The kidneys are a pair of small organs that are located near the spine at the small of the back. They take in about 20 percent of the body’s blood each time the heart beats, cleans it of unwanted substances and then produce urine, the fluid by which these wastes are eliminated from the body.

Healthy kidneys also control the concentration levels of body fluids and the kidneys expel excess water. If body fluids are too concentrated, the kidneys excrete the excess solutes and hang on to the water. In short, the kidneys are all about balancing the fluids and electrolytes in our bodies so that our systems run smoothly.

If the kidneys don’t get the water they need to perform these filtering functions, our health is the thing that suffers.

Improves skin

Water is essential to maintain the optimum skin moisture and deliver essential nutrients to the skin cells. It replenishes the skin tissue and increases its elasticity and helps to delay the appearance of signs of ageing like wrinkles and fine lines.

Water is a perfect replacement for expensive anti-ageing treatments. It keeps the skin well hydrated and glistening, thereby, enhancing the complexion. For soft and supple skin, drinking an adequate amount of water is more important than applying topical creams.

Benefits of swimming for exercise

  1. You get a full body workout. Swimming uses all of the muscles in the body, so you will get a total workout, plus your body works harder so 30 minutes in the pool is around 45 minutes of exercise land time.
  2. Swimming de-stresses and relaxes your body.
  3. Swimming is one of the most effective ways of burning calories. A gentle 30 minute swim can burn 200 calories, which is more than double the amount of calories burnt if walking.
  4. If sweating makes you hate exercise, it isn’t an issue! As the water will constantly cool you down, you’ll just be wet from the water and not your body working at full force.
