6 Uses for Avocados

Avocados are considered a miracle fruit due all their amazing health benefits. The fruit of the avocado tree is botanically a berry that contains a large seed.

This fruit is sometimes referred to as an alligator pear due to its shape and the rough green skin of some cultivatars. Avocados are classified as a member of the flowering plant family Lauraceae and they are very flavourful and have a buttery taste.

Avocados have many beneficial attributes which include:

  • Rich in fiber

  • Loaded with heart-healthy monosaturated fats

  • Very nutritious

  • High in anti-oxidants

  • Contain more potassium than bananas

  • Excellent source of minerals like iron, copper, magnesium and manganese

Due to their delicious flavour and their many established health benefits, people have found a variety of uses for avocados, here are six of them:

  1. Toast – Avocado toast is a popular and healthy breakfast or brunch choice. It is also easy to prepare. Simply mash up some fresh avocado with salt, pepper and citrus oil and add to toasted slices of bread. Additional ingredients could include feta cheese, olive oil, red pepper flakes and cherry tomatoes.

  2. Guacamole – This is a famous Mexican dip that everybody has heard of. It is primarily made up of avocados, herbs and seasonings and usually served with tortilla chips. Additional ingredients are often added to this dish such as diced tomatoes, onions and citrus juice.
  3. Facemask – Avocado based facemasks are good for treatment of acne and dry skin. The classic recipe contains half a ripe avocado, 2 tbs. of hot water and 1 tsp of honey. Simply mash up the avocado with a fork, dissolve the honey into hot water and the mix it all together. Apply the mixture to your face and keep it on for 10 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water. You can also take a natural cosmetic supplement for an even simpler way of including avocado in your beauty regime.
  4. Hair treatment – Avocado is good for dry and damaged hair, it is rich in amino acids that coat the hair shafts and help them retain moisture. A basic hair treatment (or hair mask) recipe would include 1 ripe, medium sized avocado and 2 tbsp of coconut oil. Simply mash up the avocado until it is completely free of lumps then add the coconut oil and mix well. Apply the mixture to your scalp but mostly through the length and ends of your hair. Put on a shower cap and after 30 mins wash your hair with clean water, shampoo and then conditioner. Allow your hair to air-dry and repeat this process 1-2 times a week.
  5. Salad – Avocados are a wonderful addition to a fresh salad. The extra calories from fat and fiber that avocados add to meals could help with satiety and reduce subsequent calorie intake. As salads are typically a light meal, adding avocado can make them more filling and satisfying overall.
  6. Milkshake – You might not have considered serving avocado in a milkshake or a smoothie. A quick smoothie recipe would contain 1 ripe avocado (halved and pitted), ½ banana, 1 cup of milk, ½ cup of vanilla Greek yoghurt, ½ cup of spinach and ice to taste. A basic recipe for an avocado based smoothie would contain 1 ripe Hass avocado, 2 ½ cups of whole milk, 1 tablespoon of agave or sugar, ½ tablespoon of lime or lemon juice. Blend all these ingredients together and serve in glass. Depending on your preference, you can also add chocolate syrup to adorn glass.
