April 17, 2013
My name is Mariah Koskinas, I’m an 18 year old girl from West Yorkshire. It is fair to say that I have always been a very competitive person; coming from a background of exhibiting dogs internationally and equestrian. I’ve always had issues with my image from a very young age. I was overweight when I was younger and I was bullied before I started high school. As a result I was diagnosed with body dismorphia which ultimately evolved into bulimia. I was so obsessed with being thinner that I made myself very ill living off two small meals a day. Being so worried for me and wondering how to help me, when I was 16 my Mum and Dad signed me up to our local gym “Fitness Connection”.
I became a part of their family and I was re-educated about food and eating. They were so friendly and welcoming; they treated me with respect which is typical of their generous spirit. I was taught that I have to love my body to make better changes. It was last year, aged 17, after watching the UKBFF (United Kingdom Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation) North East Championships that I announced I would compete in 2013. Ironically I was watching the Bikini Class and it is this class that I will compete in.
I was in awe when I saw all the athletes on stage, just watching how amazing their bodies looked and how confident they must have felt. I knew I wanted to be like that! Since then I have fallen in love with everything to do with fitness and nutrition and wish to better myself even more so. I have two amazing women that I look up to most and they are the other reason I have come this far mentally. Emma Foxton, a Miss Britain title holder, and Jeannie Ellam, the owner of Fitness connection and an amazing bodybuilder. Over the next 21 weeks I will be training hard with the help of my sponsor FORZA BLACK Watch this space! Mariah x
